Book Review: Harry Potter series

10 Dec

As you may or may not know, I’ve recently finished reading the entire Harry Potter Series, books 1-7, for the first time this week. I’ve been a HP fan since I was about 11. I started reading the books as soon as they came out and read up to book 4. It has since been on my bucket list to read them all as an adult. Starting in September of this year, I did just that!

I’m not sure how the idea came about, but I can watch the movies over and over! I decided to ask my best friend, Brooklyn, to lend me books 1 and 2. I read the 2 of them in about 2 weeks. I fell in love! Movies 1-3 have always been my most favorite, so it’s obvious I’d love those books just as much! I will say this… Books 1 and 2 were by far my favorite. I give them both 5 stars. They were equally captivating a major page turners!

After I gave Brooklyn back books 1 and 2, I decided to take a trip to our local library and check out books 3 and 4. It was a great excuse to renew my library card! Again, in less than a month, I finished both books. I liked 3 and 4, but not as much as I liked 1 and 2. Out of all the movies, Goblet of Fire has always been my least favorite. I’m just not a sporty person so for them to focus on Quidditch and the Triwizard tournament, I was pretty bored. I give HP3 5 stars and HP4 4 stars. JK Rowling is an amazing writer.

***** & ****

After finishing 3 and 4, I returned them to the library and checked out 5 and 6. Now… here is where the books lose me. I’m not sure what it was, but these books just didn’t really do it for me… However, because Rowling is such an amazing writer, I still give them each 4 stars.

It took me about a month and a half to get through 5 and 6. I returned them to the library and checked out the final book, 7. I liked this one in the beginning. I didn’t like it in the middle where Harry, Hermione, and Ron are still looking for horcruxes . I found it boring, as if it was just dragging on. However, I was quite pleased with the ending. I think Rowling left off on a good note. I still give this book 5 stars.

*****

Overall, comparing the books to the movies, I was quite disappointed. While I love the movies, and they are entertaining, I couldn’t believe how much was changed and left out in the movies. I mean, I understand you have to cut so much out for the sake of time management; I just feel like they could’ve done a better job. If my book got turned into a movie, I would not be giving away complete creative control. I want my movie to go by the book!

In the end, I’m very pleased with the books overall. I highly recommend them.
